Girls Who Code of Howard County {virtual} Middle School Club Classes Begin Feb 21st! This out-of-school program teaches girls teamwork, time management, communication skills, and confidence through computer science. Our club provides activities that support sisterhood along with structured curriculum to introduce and expose girls to the fundamental concepts of programming. When: Weekly Sun, Feb 21, 2021 through Sun, Apr 18, 2021 Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm Eligibility: Girls Who Code is open by enrollment only to all girls and non binary students in grades 6–8. No experience necessary. Cost: Our club is FREE. Donations are encouraged and appreciated to cover the cost of computing equipment, insurance, and activities. Looking for a unique gift idea for your curious 2nd-5th grader? Tech Changers is currently accepting registration for two new virtual programs specifically designed to engage and challenge students in grades 2-5 in unique learning experiences. Our virtual classes are taught via Zoom with small size classes taught by certified educators. Students are encouraged to connect and learn together while having fun! Our Makey Makey class is designed to get 4th-5th graders off the computer and creating with circuits, LED's, alligator clips, and Makey Makey's. Every student receives a Makey Makey Maker Kit with all the materials to participate in the class and a space to share their creations with others in the class. Code Monkey is designed specifically for students in Grades 2-3 to teach fundamental coding concepts via engaging lessons and fun coding challenges using the Code Monkey platform. Small classes are taught by experienced certified instructors to support all learners and offer opportunities to connect to others who love to code. Every students receives a 1 yr subscription to Code Monkey and access to a collaborative space to stay connected to their class and continue coding using the Code Monkey 1 year subscription included with every registration. Tech Changers is excited to offer virtual coding programs to the community during these unprecedented times. We will continue virtual classes as long as the need exists and look forward to continuing our in person programs at the USRA STEMaction Center in the future. Our mission is and always will be to... "disrupt disparity in CS and STEM." We do this by creating space for all students in the Howard County area to participate in our programs. #HoCoCSforAll. When you register for a class, you create an opportunity for a student from a local Title I school to experience the same program. BONUS: Registrations received by December 10th will receive their course materials kit by Dec 13th in time for Hanukkah. Due to the Covid19 pandemic, the landscape of our planet has suddenly changed. As a result, many things we have looked to as normal will look different far into the future. Drastic measures and sacrifices have been made by every American. These actions have been difficult but impactful. Everyone is doing their part to get through this disaster. And Tech Changers is here to do our part to support the Howard County community through programming designed to provide opportunities to connect, explore and create.
We are still here, innovating and adapting. We are exploring ways to continue our mission. We will continue to offer engaging, standards based learning opportunities through programs and community outreach. Our programs are lead by caring industry experts and educators. We strive to bring students from different backgrounds and experiences together to create, explore and connect. After several pilot projects, we are ready to go online via Zoom to offer new programs that support Howard County CS for All. We look forward to providing opportunities to all students to learn, create and connect via their passion for Computer Science and STEM. Our elementary programs are full but we still have some openings in our Girls Who Code programs.
The Girls Who Code Middle School Club is meeting on Sundays from 2-4 beginning on February 23rd and the Girls Who Code High School Club is meeting on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 beginning Feb 10th! Both programs are facilitated by experienced instructors who work as professional in the STEM industry and have been facilitating our Girls Who Code clubs since 2015!
